We offer a lot of planning advice for your ceremony and portraits, but just as important is your reception after! Rob and I were finalizing reception songs the day before our wedding. 😱 We don’t want that to happen to you. Here are the best father-daughter dance songs for your wedding reception!
Your wedding is a celebration of two families becoming linked together as one. It’s up to you to decide if you want to have a slow and emotional song expressing your thanks and love for your dad, or if you’d rather an upbeat song to swing to together. This is definitely a decision to include your father in, too!

When Should The Father-Daughter Dance Take Place?
Traditionally the reception dancing starts with the couple’s first dance as husband and wife, followed by the father-daughter dance, then the mother-son dance. Often these three main dances are followed by the anniversary dance and/or open dancing.
In recent years we’ve seen more couples decide to enter the reception and immediately go into their first dances. This can be a great way to ensure to have this celebration with all of your guests in case some leave after dinner! Alternatively, most commonly the order of reception is entrances, dinner, toasts, then dancing. Whatever you decide is entirely up to you – after all, this is your day!

👉 👉 Before Your Dance Ends!!
As your wedding photographers, we love capturing this sentimental dance for the two of you! Our approach to photographing wedding receptions is a mostly documentary perspective. However, before your dance ends we recommend you do two things:
- Give your dad a BIG hug!
- Make sure we can capture at least one picture of the two of you smiling at the camera!
