Dave and Claire wed in a private ceremony in the woods of his family land. Their day was full of connection and thoughtful details for a Duluth wedding that felt perfectly “home.”

We’ve truly been SO excited for this Duluth wedding day ever since Claire and Dave’s forest engagement session in the spring – and it did not disappoint! Dave and Claire are the type of couple that Rob and I immediately felt like old friends with from the get-go, and we were looking forward to seeing them again and meeting the rest of their family.

The four-hour drive to Duluth the day before was torrential rain most of the way, and we wondered what the weekend had in store for us. Thankfully, by late afternoon the skies cleared and the rest of the weekend was crisp and golden, the type of early October weather Midwesterners love!

Getting Ready: A Calm Start to a Joyful Day

We could feel the warmth from the moment we pulled down the driveway of Dave’s family property. The cozy home and surrounding woods weren’t just a backdrop; they were part of the story. It was easy to see why they chose this for their wedding – private, with towering trees and the soft trickle of the river in the background. We loved it from the start.

Claire had just arrived back from hair and makeup, and she helped the rest of the family finish up charcuterie boards downstairs. As I worked on detail images, I listened to the happy chatter of family bustling around to finalize last-minute details. There was no stress, no worry, just joy.

Dave got ready in a separate wing of the house with his dad and sister. It was the same atmosphere, easy-going excitement and so ready for the day.

As Claire stepped into her dress, she commented that she felt like a princess, and how different it felt from what she usually wore to work in the forest! I loved the easy elegance of her dress that lace and tulle give. While Claire originally hoped to go barefoot, the temperature was chillier than expected after all the rain, and she opted for a pair of slippers. Better to be warm and comfortable!

As her mom and sister cleaned up after getting ready, Claire was a little silly and giddy. It was so fun watching her swish around in her gown and soak in the specialness of the day!

First Look by the River

When it was time for their first look, we made our way down to a big cedar tree by the river’s edge, one of Dave’s favorite spots since he was a child. He’s extremely easygoing about pretty much everything, but this was one of Dave’s few specific requests for their wedding day.

As we waited for Claire to walk down from the house, I took a moment to appreciate how the golden sunlight filtered through the branches, and how perfectly they knocked it out of the park with the weather. This was our first Duluth wedding to photograph, but I hope it’s not our last – I love everything about this area. 😍

Dave’s reaction when he saw Claire? Happy, beautiful, can’t-believe-I-get-to-marry-you tears. Claire was glowing, Dave was emotional, and honestly, I could’ve stayed in that moment forever – then we heard cheering and laughter as we remembered their parents were all watching from behind the trees a little ways away! Dave flashed them a big thumbs-up and Claire grinned.

After giving them a few more minutes to themselves, we walked around the property and took portraits. As we walked along the river and through the woods, Dave and Claire shared different tidbits of family history and information about the different buildings on the property – talk about a couple who values their heritage!

Intimate Duluth Wedding Ceremony in the Heart of the Woods

The ceremony took place in a clearing surrounded by towering trees. Dave had built a beautiful arbor for the occasion, and it was decorated simply but thoughtfully with solar lights. An aisle of tree stumps selected by Dave and Claire led the way lit with candles and gnomes, and stepping stones crafted by Dave’s mother Jean decorated the path.

What I loved most, though, was how their families were woven into the ceremony. All four of their parents took turns reading passages while standing around Dave and Claire, and you could feel how much love and support surrounded them.

Then came the handfasting ritual, an ancient tradition where they literally “tied the knot” with a cord. It was such a sweet way to symbolize their bond before they exchanged rings and sealed it all with a kiss. From where Dave grew up, and the town he and Claire met, to returning here for their wedding – having their wedding in the same place felt like coming full circle.

After the ceremony, we captured family pictures and a few more portraits. But my favorite portraits were yet to come …

After-Dark Wedding Portraits

Early on in wedding planning, Claire had shared her vision with me of having after-dark portraits at the location of their wedding ceremony lit up with the solar lights and candles. I was grateful she didn’t spring this on us last minute because it allowed us to build this into their timeline so we weren’t rushing the day of their wedding! Instead, it worked out perfectly to plan these for right after sunset and just before the start of their reception (to which they had invited a larger number of guests) and then they didn’t have to leave their reception later for other pictures.

We only spent about 10 minutes creating these images, but these are some of my favorite wedding portraits to date because they are so unique! The glowing candles and the twinkling lights hanging from the arbor created the perfect ambiance, and we used just a single off-camera flash to illuminate the couple.

Tented Wedding Reception

The reception was relaxed and so fitting for Dave and Claire’s personalities. They hosted it under a big tent on the lawn and filled it with friends and family. Everything was forest-themed — a nod to Dave and Claire’s shared love of nature and their careers in forest-related fields.

One of the standout details? The head table, which Claire built herself! Yes, you read that right — cutting the boards, sanding, and even epoxying the wood. It looked truly professional, and I loved how they accented with candles and whimsical gnome decorations on either side.

Instead of a formal dinner, Dave and Claire opted for a grazing table overflowing with charcuterie and a couple of big casserole dishes of comfort foods like macaroni and cheese. It felt welcoming and effortless, exactly how they wanted it to be. For dessert, a traditional cake was joined by a variety of cupcakes—something for everyone to enjoy.

The evening music was provided by a live guitarist which made everything feel even more intimate and special.

The Heart of the Day

At its core, Dave and Claire’s wedding was about love — love for each other, love for their families, and love for the home and forest that has shaped so many of their memories. Every detail was personal, every moment felt intentional, and the whole day was such a reflection of who they are.

As we drove away that night, we couldn’t stop smiling. These are the kinds of weddings that remind us why we do what we do—because at the end of the day, it’s all about the story. Your story.
