Jess and Jordy contacted us for anniversary pictures, explaining they wanted to plan winter photos near their home in Calumet. What a great way to make the most of the longest season of the year! She said she was hoping for lots of snow on the tree branches. We knew just the place.
We ended up having a big blizzard the weekend we scheduled for Jordy and Jess’s anniversary pictures and had to move their session date back. This ended up working out beautifully, and the landscape was covered in a fresh blanket of snow. Early winter gets me so excited for portrait sessions. I love when the trees are “frosted” in snow, providing such a great contrast against the green pine needles.

Planning Winter Anniversary Photos in Calumet
Jess and Jordy spend as much time as they can hiking and exploring the outdoors, both locally and far away. In fact, Jordy and Jess had a destination elopement in Colorado in 2017. She shared that she hiked 5 miles in her wedding gown to get to their selected ceremony location!
Rob and I love getting out and enjoying the Keweenaw with people who love the area as much as we do, especially in the winter! We don’t have as many portrait sessions in the winter as we do during the warmer months, so winter portrait sessions are even more special.
This trailhead starts on Lakeshore Drive in Calumet, and is accessible in early winter. However, Rob and I came back with plans to snowshoe here the next weekend, and nearly a foot more of snow had accumulated! I was glad we were able to take advantage of this trail for Jess & Jordy’s winter photos before the snow got deep!

This old wooden bridge was perfect for winter photos, layered with clean snow. Jordy and Jess are a relaxed, easy-going couple. It was easy to talk and get to know them as we hiked, and as you can see we had a lot of laughs!

What to Wear for Winter Photos in the Keweenaw?
It was a cold but wind-free afternoon in Calumet, so Jordy and Jess were game to take some of their pictures without coats on. They both wore good boots for trekking through snow! In the winter, pay attention less to how your boots look and more attention to whether they will keep your feet warm! Jess wore tall North Face boots* that were both warm and stylish.

As I mention in my tips for winter photos post, in addition to dressing for the weather, we make sure to include lots of movement in winter sessions. Jordy even gave Jess a piggy back ride!
What you don’t see – even being a calm day, we took lots of warmup breaks where Jess and Jordy donned their coats and gloves. As we wrapped up, I suggested Jess keep her coat on for a few last images. I love fur-rimmed hoods on down jackets – they scream Keweenaw to me 🙂

In closing –
Jordy and Jess – we loved getting to know you guys as we explored the trails of Calumet. Wishing you many more happy anniversaries full of adventure!
