Emma’s family lives out west, but they love driving back and spending summers in Ontonagon. It’s where Emma’s dad grew up, and her family continues to build more memories here as the years go on. As her senior year rolled around, Emma knew she wanted her senior pictures in Ontonagon, a place that is so special to her and her family.
When Emma and I started planning her senior session, she knew she wanted something that felt like her — a mix of adventure, Michigan’s natural beauty, and just the right amount of carefree summer vibes. And honestly? We couldn’t have picked a better day or a better spot for her session. Early July in the Upper Peninsula is pure magic, and Ontonagon delivered with sunshine, blue skies, and just enough of a lake breeze to keep things comfortable.
Senior Photos at the Historic Railroad Bridge in Ontonagon
We kicked things off at the historic railroad bridge, a hidden gem just down the road from the Ontonagon marina. The trestle, with its old iron framework and weathered wooden railroad ties, stretches over the river, creating a stunning backdrop with a mix of rugged history and natural beauty. But I must admit — walking out onto that bridge is not for the faint of heart! The gaps between the ties mean you can see straight down to the river below, and as someone who isn’t exactly best friends with heights, I had to channel some serious bravery. 😅 (Footage from our bridge walk here!) As we tiptoed our way to the center, Emma confessed, “I don’t remember it being this scary when I was little!” Nevertheless, we made it to our destination, shaky legs and all!

Because it was midsummer, the sun had warmed up the tar on the trestles, which meant we had to limit sitting poses. But that didn’t slow us down. We leaned into movement — twirls, walking, a little hair-tossing. Emma’s energy and natural joy made every shot feel effortless. She absolutely owned the moment, and it was so fun to capture.

Emma did a quick outfit change with our changing tent and we grabbed a few final images with the bridge in the background. I loved how she incorporated her personality to mix her sneakers and dress together!
Senior Pictures On The Beach in Ontonagon MI
After wrapping up at the bridge, we made our way to the beach. Ontonagon sits along Lake Superior’s coast with miles of both sandy and rocky beaches, boat launches, and campgrounds. Emma and I both kicked off our shoes and enjoyed the clean, soft sand underneath our feet. As you travel north into the Keweenaw Peninsula many beaches are covered in coarse, black stamp sand, but this beach is pristine and perfect for pictures!

There is no beach I love more than a Lake Superior beach. Emma’s senior pictures on the beach in Ontonagon MI were a perfect example. Warm sun, crisp waves — it’s the kind of place that makes you stop and just breathe it all in. Emma’s family sat on the beach and relaxed, fully enjoying their vacation time while Emma and I explored the shoreline, playing in the waves and laughing until our stomachs hurt.

Emma’s tiered dress was perfectly in style and moved beautifully with the breeze. I checked in occasionally to make sure she wasn’t overheating because of its dark color, but the light cotton breathed well in addition to being super flattering.
Dogs Are Part Of The Family, Too!
We ended Emma’s senior session back at their campground, where her two dogs eagerly awaited their turn in front of the camera. They were both so well-behaved, and of course adorable!! I love when seniors include their pets in senior pictures. It makes the photos that much more personal, and of all the laughs Emma and I shared throughout the afternoon together, none was more genuine than the ones with her two pups. I know these will be some of the images she treasures most in years to come.
