Bootjack Senior Pictures on The Farm: Natalie’s Story
Natalie has a deep connection to her family’s farm in Bootjack, Michigan. Growing up, it was a summer sanctuary – filled with warm sunshine, laughter, and exploring the many acres of fields and forest surrounding the little cedar shake farmhouse. When it came time for her senior pictures, there was no question. Natalie and her mom agreed – they were driving to Bootjack!
We planned Natalie’s session for early September, a time when the Keweenaw is at its best. The days are warm with low humidity and the bugs are nonexistent – what more could you ask for in the Upper Peninsula?
Perfectly Unique Senior Photos On Private Property
We originally discussed splitting Natalie’s session between the farm and her family’s camp further into Bootjack. But once we were on the property, I knew we didn’t need to go anywhere else. The variety on this land was incredible. From the rustic barn to rolling fields and a massive oak tree, every corner was a new photo opportunity waiting to happen. Plus, staying in one location gave us the chance to explore fully without worrying about losing the daylight to travel time.
Some of my favorite senior sessions result from shooting on private property because we end up with one-of-a-kind sessions. Literally no one else has portraits like this, because no one else has access to this location! And it’s more than just the picturesque backdrop for senior photos, it’s the personal connection that comes from photographing in a place that truly means something and has its own unique history. Natalie’s personality truly came alive here because every setting felt like home.
One of my favorite spots was the barn—a true testament to the history of the farm. The late afternoon sun streamed through the weathered boards, creating the most magical backlighting. Natalie’s smile lit up even brighter in those moments, and it was easy to see how much this place meant to her.
Capturing Natalie’s Personality
Natalie is one of those people who radiates joy and warmth. She’s down-to-earth, with a completely contagious laugh. Her outfit choices perfectly reflected her personality, a mix of classic and fun, with a touch of casual elegance. We made sure to incorporate her favorite spots on the farm, from the barn stacked with hay to the sunlit field where she spent hours as a kid. She’s also a competitive tennis player in her local high school team, so we were sure to include that in a couple of her images!
It’s these personal touches that make senior photography so special. By choosing a location with so much personal meaning, Natalie’s senior photos come away uniquely hers.
What’s in Natalie’s future? She plans on going into the pre-med track and pursuing either anesthesiology or radiology.
I love getting a couple of shots of parents during senior pictures if they’re game. Natalie and her mom were so sweet together; I loved seeing their close relationship as they laughed and teased each other.

Bootjack is one of those hidden gems in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula that doesn’t get nearly enough credit. It’s a quiet pocket of the Keweenaw with winding roads, rustic farms, and so much character. As an Upper Peninsula senior photographer, I’ve worked in some truly incredible locations, but shooting here reminded me why I love senior pictures – it’s about creating images that don’t just mark a milestone, but tell a story.
