It’s the time of year when we’re finally getting to connect in person with a lot of our 2022 couples instead of just chatting over Zoom, and we love it!
Trevor and Emily are tying the knot in October 2022 and planning a fall-themed wedding. Autumn in the UP is truly spectacular, and Emily really wanted their engagement session to have the Keweenaw fall colors as well.
We had such a fun evening with these two enjoying the autumn colors. While it’s not quite a “love at first sight” love story (well, it is halfway), it’s funny and natural, just like them. Trevor kept Emily (and us!) laughing as the evening went on, and we loved getting to know them both better as a couple. Having been together for a number of years, they fall right into place in conversations, taking turns sharing additional details with wide smiles.
Keweenaw Peninsula October Engagement Session with Fall Colors
Fall 2021 has been a crazy year for everyone. Emily was just coming off of a 20+ work day stretch (how does she do it?!) You would never know it from their session!
When we were originally trying to schedule their engagement session, it was feeling a little iffy – do we try to schedule in September and hope there’s enough color to pop? Or do we wait until October and hope the windy weather holds off so there are still leaves on the trees? Ah, the joys of living in the Midwest!
Fortunately the timing worked out perfectly with peak color. I think 2021 is the nicest fall we have ever enjoyed in Hancock – I swear we had peak colors for three straight weeks! The variety of trees – maple, birch, oak – definitely helps, as each species tends to change at a slightly different time.
We met Trevor & Emily at the Quincy Dredge No. 2. This is one of my favorite places to visit in the fall, although the weather was giving me flashbacks to Emma’s senior session with the heavy clouds! An hour before we were scheduled to meet we had blue skies with just a few puffy clouds, and the clouds were literally rolling in as we drove over. Thankfully the rain held off until later in the evening, and we even had enough sun for some glowy golden hour shots!

Trevor proposed to Emily at home on their 3 year anniversary. They had just adopted their 10-month-old son Zaiden 11 days before. Emily says, “That made our little family official. 😊”
Sweet, simple, and private – my favorite type of proposal! (That’s how Rob’s proposal was as well!)

Autumn Engagement Session in Hancock Michigan
After the dredge we headed up Airport Park Road to the top of Quincy Hill. Trevor and Emily get the award for literally fastest outfit change ever! I loved their outfit choices – the golden hues were the perfect complement to the fall colors the Keweenaw had on display.

Another reason we originally held off on scheduling their engagement session is because Emily’s ring had gone in for maintenance and cleaning to fix a loose stone. I’m so glad we waited because her ring was flawless – I couldn’t tell that there had ever been an issue! Laiti Jewelers does great work and we highly recommend them!

I swear, this is my favorite tree in the whole Keweenaw Peninsula. Those sweeping branches make me giddy every time!

Golden Hour Portraits in the Keweenaw Fall Colors

Generally when planning an engagement session we aim to meet an hour and a half to two hours before sunset. (At least in the spring and fall – that can be way too late in the summer!!) Most of the time this is perfect timing to end the session. I’ll admit, however – I was a little worried with the heavy clouds this evening. Fortunately the clouds broke up just enough for a few moments of perfect sunlight through the trees. That backlit glow makes me swoon every time!
