Choosing Hungarian Falls For Addison’s Winter Senior Pictures

Since winter is such a big part of our life in the Upper Peninsula, Addison wanted to incorporate that into her senior portraits. After reviewing all the Keweenaw Peninsula has to offer, we ended up splitting her senior pictures into a two-season portrait extravaganza – and it was so fun! Senior year is such a milestone, and having just one day for portraits means it goes by so fast. After spending her fall session frolicking through the fields and along the coast of Lake Superior, Addison revealed she dreamed of a frozen waterfall setting for her winter portraits. I knew just the one.

Little did we know, it would be the winter of very little snow in the UP, and we’d have to wait longer than expected. Thankfully, after much patience — going on frantic worry — the snow fell and we were gifted the winter wonderland we hoped for.

Hungarian Falls in the Winter – A Hidden Gem

Hungarian Falls in the heart of the Keweenaw Peninsula is a location that practically begs to be photographed any time of year, but the winter holds a special charm. In the last few years it’s finally been “discovered” by visitors, and in warm weather months it’s rare to have the location to ourselves. Winter’s blanket of snow brings peace to the area and makes it a perfect time for some truly unique senior portraits without an audience!

Addison came prepared with cozy flannels and knits that kept her warm and added beautiful texture to the photos. I always encourage clothing with some texture because it photographs so well and creates interest, especially against the snow which can appear “flat.” Her earthy tones were the perfect pops of color against the snowy landscape, and her layered outfits were effortlessly stylish while staying practical for the cold weather.

Capturing Addison’s Personality In The Forest

I’ve photographed Hungarian Falls sessions countless times, but winter adds a special layer all its own. I loved that Addison was so enthusiastically game for anything. Without any prompting, she offered to head into the creek “since that’s what I normally do anyway.” A true Yooper girl after my own heart! 😂

Both of Addison’s parents work for the US Forest Service, so it’s no surprise they love to hike and explore together. This connection to nature made Hungarian Falls the perfect choice for her photos. We spent our time at the middle falls, capturing the stunning ice formations and Addison’s natural confidence. Afterward, we hiked the surrounding trails, soaking in the beauty of the forest and capturing candid moments that truly reflected her adventurous spirit. The peaceful stillness of the woods set the scene for a day that felt straight out of a storybook.

Addison’s bright smile and easy laughter brought warmth to the chilly day, making the entire session feel effortless and fun. Multiple season-sessions are becoming more popular, and they have so many benefits! Not only do seniors get additional variety in their images, but I find we’re also able to create more authentic images. The more time we spend together, the better I get to know them and bring out who they really are in their portraits. As Michael Scott says, it’s a win-win-win. 😉
