It’s National Cupcake Day, so let’s talk about your dessert table! There are so many options and as wedding photographers, we’ve seen a lot of great displays! What are the best wedding dessert ideas for your wedding?
When you’re planning your wedding, you’re also designing a reception for your guests to enjoy. Here are a few of our favorite ideas when it comes to planning your wedding desserts.
Best Wedding Ideas for Traditional Couples
It you want to take a more traditional route, consider a wedding cake. Cakes are beautiful and offer great photo-ops, both at the beginning of the reception and if you decide to do a cake cutting.

Did you know? According to GalaFacility.com, originally the wedding cake was intended to be passed out to wedding guests by only the bride. As weddings began to be larger events, this became a task for both the bride and groom. In time, the cake-cutting ceremony began. The groom was to place his hand over that of the bride as a promise to take care of her and their future.

At recent weddings, we’ve seen more couples opt for a cutting cake in lieu of a larger one. A cutting cake is a small cake made solely for the purpose of the cake-cutting tradition. It’s a way for newlyweds to have something to cut and share, but also provide more dessert options for their guests rather than just cake. (Okay, it’s not “JUST” cake – it’s decadent, delicious, creamy goodness … But you know what I mean!)

Another wedding dessert idea is to add some flair by showcasing your family heritage. Emily’s family is Danish, so she made sure to order a kringle from their favorite Danish bakery in Wisconsin for her reception. This was a fun way to personalize tradition.
Best Wedding Ideas For Trendy Couples
Cake comes in all shapes, sizes, and flavors. When hosting your wedding reception, it can feel overwhelming trying to make sure your guests will all be able to enjoy some sort of tasty treat.

Donut tables are a great way to offer variety to your wedding guests. Glazed, powdered, filled, or plain – there’s something for everyone!

Another option for easy-to-eat wedding desserts is cupcakes. Cupcakes are an ideal wedding dessert because they’re easy to eat by hand – no juggling a plate and fork. Additionally, it’s often easier to have extra flavors and even a gluten-free option without taking up a lot of space. And they’re so pretty to photograph – especially when you add some extra lighting details. 🙂

Confession – I can never resist a well-frosted cupcake at wedding receptions!

Dessert tables offer way more variety for your guests! You can do brownies, cookies, pie, and more! The dessert table makes serving dessert super easy, since you don’t have to worry about having someone cut and serve cake.
Don’t love baked cakes? That’s okay! Your dessert table can be whatever you want it to be! Aaron and Brittany’s treat table included for a variety of homemade cheesecakes and fudge – and we didn’t hear a single guest comment on the lack of “traditional” cakes.

Finally, don’t forget the ever-popular candy bar! This is a great option to offer lots of variety without spending hours in the kitchen. Your guests will love it at the reception, and they’ll love having a take-home treat, too.

In closing:
If you really can’t decide, there’s no reason you can’t have a variety of desserts! Get a small cake that you can cut, and other treats for everyone to pick what they want! Whatever you decide – make sure it’s authentic to who you are as a couple. Don’t feel pressured to follow a trend just because someone else is doing it. Consider offering a variety of treats to make sure there’s something for everyone.
