Devon’s family lives out west, but they love driving back and spending summers at their camp in the Upper Peninsula. As her senior year approached, Devon knew just what she wanted for her senior pictures – to have them in the UP, a place that is so special to her family and so full of memories.
Senior Photos in Baraga MI
On Devon’s consult call, we talked through all the possibilities for her senior photos. The two must-haves? Forest and water – oh, and they were coming from Gwinn; did I know anywhere to meet halfway? I knew just the place. 😀 We met just north of Baraga MI at the Ojibwa Recreation Area. While we don’t photograph in Baraga nearly enough, I remembered falling in love with this perfectly tucked away stretch of beach at Brittney & Aaron’s engagement session and was thrilled to be visiting the area in warmer weather!
Devon loves Michigan’s forests and is considering becoming a conservation officer to help protect and preserve the environment and wildlife. She loves spending the summers here in the Upper Peninsula, where the landscape is so different than the plains of southern Wyoming where her family resides. Beyond her love for the outdoors, Devon is smart, passionate, and driven. She loves to crochet, practice yoga, play volleyball, and go fishing with her dad!
We started Devon’s session closer to the campground to catch the sunlight glow through the pine trees. Sometimes there’s a warmup period getting to know seniors – but not so with Devon! She bounced out of their vehicle and greeted me with a grin and a big hug; it felt like we had known each other for years as we laughed and walked down the road.
Golden Hour Senior Portraits in a Flower Field
Baraga MI has an abundance of wildflowers in July, and as we headed toward the beach we discovered a field of purple coneflowers that nearly perfectly matched Devon’s dress. What a happy coincidence! 😍 She positively beamed as we explored the field and admired the flowers. Devon is the second-to-oldest of four girls, and her two younger sisters tagged along to help. They held my lights, carried bags, and most of all, were Devon’s ultimate cheerleaders, gasping with delight at each new setting. So, of course, we made sure to include them in a few pictures, too!
Lake Superior Sunset Pictures in the Bay
After a quick outfit change, we headed onto the beach and into the water! (This is why I always bring my changing tent with us – to optimize changing time for even more variety in portraits!) Devon’s knee-length dress made it easy to wade in the water without getting waterlogged, and the classic white stood out effortlessly in the late evening twilight. These beach portraits felt so natural and carefree, a perfect representation of this exciting season in her life.
We ended up going a little overtime for Devon’s session – but can you blame us?! As the July Buck Moon rose in the distance, we took these final stunning images and hugged goodbye one last time.
In closing –
Devon and family, thank you for planning this special senior experience into your Michigan vacation. I’m so glad you chose Rob and me to be a part of these memories. We had such a fun evening with you guys! I hope our paths cross again in the summers ahead. Best wishes as you chase and reach your dreams! 🙂
To all my soon-to-be seniors, if you’re dreaming of senior photos that feel like you, let’s make it happen! Whether it’s on the shores of Lake Superior, a favorite hiking trail, or another spot with sentimental meaning, I’d love to help tell your story through my lens.
